I kid you not. The Husband – Lovely Bloke – has decided he would like to build us a house. There’s greaseproof paper all over the dining room table and sharpies abound. One colour for bedrooms, another for appliances and the rest, well, I don’t know what he’s going on about.
I do know what I’m thinking of though – money !!! I was really surprised to realise that actually, building a house is not as expensive as I thought it would be. Lovely Bloke has returned from the Ideal Home Show – a couple of weeks ago, with so much info on German built pre fabricated house kits that it feels much more accessible than it would have done a month ago.
To do this, we’d have to sell our house, move into rented – or more likely with us – a caravan on site and go at it from there. We might also need to borrow some money in the short term, to get it kitted out? It sounds simple enough but I really do not know as to how I’d do with this. Remember when we moved the kitchen from one end of the house to the other? I certainly do. It still gives me the shakes to think about it. But it would mean huge bedrooms for both boys and space for my Mum and Dad when we eventually get them to agree to move down here.
Has anyone out there built their own place? Is it as bad as I think it will be? Is it worth it?
My aunt and uncle embarked on a very similar journey a few years ago when they built their home – rented a living space on site and went from there – they haven’t regretted it!
One thing they haven’t regretted is having their appliances built in, as it saves on a tonne of space! We ended up following suit and kitting out our kitchen with built in appliances and they look so much nice! I would recommend this one, http://www.buyhomeappliance.co.uk/laundry/built-in-laundry/hotpoint-bhwd129-washer-dryer-built-in-6-5kg-1200rpm, especially to get started anyway until you know how much space you’re working with!
Good luck with the build, I can’t wait to see how it will look!
