A house of cards…

23rd August 2015 CambridgeMummy Leave a Comment

I was just going through my posts in draft – to review the 46 that are in there – and decide what can / should be published and which are too navel gazing and self absorbed to see the light of day. I found this, which I drafted after a Christmas – looks like the one just gone, or the one before. And I figure actually, it’s ok to publish it. Because it’s real. And I like real. So, here’s to keeping it real – what’s happening in your house right now? Go on, tell me in the comments… x

I was talking to someone in December about how life, although it’s blessed and we’re very fortunate, is actually running on the basis of being a house of cards – when one aspect goes, everything else does with it.

And then over the weekend, a new ish Mummy told me how she was amazed at everything that I and we as a collective were making happen, juggling and generally keeping the Good Ship Weston afloat. So I feel it’s important to share just how successfully (or not) that’s working out right now. In our current house of cards, there is:

1. A lot of work to be done – that I really want to do and want to have enough time to work on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

2. A house which is in need of a good clean after having lots of different people to stay in it over Christmas.

3. Boys off school until next Tuesday – childcare juggling has resumed forthwith.

4. Youngest with another ear infection and to add some variety, which is after all, the spice of life, conjunctivitis and a cold to go with it. Some call it the Holy Trinity. I call it not fair.

5. Food shopping, still sat on the floor of the kitchen in bags. Lovely Bloke managed to but it this morning with the boys – but took a lot longer because he literally carried youngest around Waitrose – see number 4. Hence not having time to put anything other than fridge and freezer essentials away.

6. Washing up to go in dishwasher, that’s needing to be unstacked, before I can re stack it.

7. Ironing – god, there’s so much ironing. I’m going to invent disposable clothing shortly – I can’t face any more ironing.

If you’re reading this and thinking that I should be having a cleaner and someone to do the ironing every week, don’t worry, because I wholeheartedly agree with you. [[ UPDATE: I got pneumonia and we did indeed get a cleaner. Who we still have to this day, and she’s the saviour of my marriage….]]

And if you’re reading this and thinking that I’m lucky to have these problems and challenges then again, don’t fret, because I wholeheartedly agree with you. Doesn’t stop them existing though. Right now, it’s all unravelling because youngest is poorly which means that I’m writing this sat in my bed with my laptop. Unable to get the work done that I wanted to, because I can’t get the wifi to work from here. I’m in my bed, with littlest person next to me, with everything lined up, squished, vertically alongside me. I know that I’m not going to get much sleep tonight.

I know that I’m going to have to go to work an hour late tomorrow, because I want to start Lovely Bloke and the boys off with a bit of a better downstairs to go to. And I know that I’m likely to get the cold and Lord Only Knows What Else, from having littlest entwined around me all night – sweating, snotting and putting fingers everywhere on himself and me.

I just wanted to document that it doesn’t always go to plan, that it really does only take one thing going wrong or not happening to plan, for everything else to start to unravel around it. It’s not perfect. I’m not doing it perfectly. But for the most part we are making it work. And I don’t think I can ask for much more than that at this point in the life of myself, and that of my family.

OK, that’s the post. Now tell me, what’s happening in your house as you read this? Where are your troops? What are they doing? What does real life look life in your house?
