So today’s the day. It’s Race for Life Cambridge – we were in Cambridge yesterday and saw lots of signage about how the roads would be closed and diverted. Excitement was definitely building. I’m not doing the Race for Life itself today, but I am doing something else, which I’ll share in a separate post shortly. But what I do have is some funding from Scottish Power, who are supporting several bloggers who are doing it. I know, it’s a bit confusing but go with it….
Scottish Power are supporting bloggers who are doing either a Race for Life, or something of their own choosing, with £250 of funding to do with as they choose. In theory I could have kept it and used it for a handbag (hellooooooo, Orla Kiely). But I didn’t want to do that. We already have an ongoing commitment to a cancer charity, so I didn’t want to use my funding there either. I know some people bought trainers and kit to help them prepare for today, which is great not least because we know that healthy active people can fight cancer and its consequences better than overweight people like me.
So, what did I do with my funding? Well, I decided to do good in my local community. Things that I wanted to do and would make a difference, in different ways. Half of the funding went to Romsey Mill where I bought some much needed kit for their children’s services – a play table and stand called a Tuff Table. And the other half, I decided to put towards buying a special lunch for all the teachers, teaching assistant and support staff at the school our boys go to. I felt that the latter was just as important a thing to do. Because our teachers are stretched, working hard and just like our boys, are looking for the finish line – the end of term – as much as we are. I also think that they are treated by some people, as childcare for their children. Everyone who works in a school, is playing a huge part in shaping the next generation of people who will run our country and make the world a better place. So I wanted to do a relatively small something to ensure that they knew that when I had chance to, I wanted to show my gratitude for the work they do.
Whoever you fundraise for, whoever you choose to support, whatever you choose to do, I hope that everyone who is involved in Race for Life feels good today for the good things that they are doing – for themselves, their families and their communities. x
