So, we have a dilemma on our hands. What do we do about our next car? My first car was a Ford Escort 1200 sport and I loved it. Lovely Bloke had an Audi A3 4×4 when I met him and it’s fair to say that I put it through its paces. From there we’ve had a really nice Mazda and a Mercedes. But right now, we’re on an admittedly old, and fairly weathered Mondeo. I’ll be totally honest and say that it came from someone who used to visit lots of Farms and places off the beaten and perfectly roaded track. So it’s not great to look at – there are bumps, lumps and scratches on it. But what it does have, is brilliant air con, six gears and plenty of space for us all. It’s done around 130K of miles, and we know it won’t run forever.
So we’re doing our research for when the day comes that we need to thank it for the miles of good service and travel it’s given us. And here is the dilemma. Do we stick with a 5 seater car or go for a 7 seater? Once or twice a week, there’s a point where it would be useful for us to have 7 seats. We’d also like to have 7 seats so that we can go out with my parents and my in laws with us all in the same car. We’d like to have space for at some point in the future, a dog. But don’t mention that bit to my Husband as he’s not sold on that last bit yet.
But we don’t need it every day, so is it just a bit indulgent of us to look for something that will be the cherry on the top of the car cake? We’re going to CarFest North with Ford at the end of the month and will be going over the CMax and the Eco Sport with a fine tooth comb. We really will. The former has 7 seats but will it be too big, too middle aged, too cumbersome for us? The latter is not quite a 4 x 4 and is a hybrid as well, which we are interested in. But the biggest engine on it is a 1.5 litre and we’re used to a bit more power than that.
So, over to you. What car do you drive? Do you need 7 seats for picking up other children for playdates after school, holidays and trips out? Or do you just make it work with a 5 seater? I’m genuinely torn as to what to look for – and it won’t necceasily be a Ford although we’d like it to be as they run forever and also, you can get parts easily and have them fixed by pretty much anyone who is a decent mechanic.
And dare I say it, does anyone use their cooled glovebox regularly? Or put a fridge in the back? I think I would – we are in the heatwave – or at least, the UK’s version of it and whenever we do sports – including in the winter, they love a cold drink afterwards. And the other thing we want is a charging point in the back for us to be able to charge the ipads on long haul drives. The shopping list of things we want goes on and on.
What’s on your list of priorities when you look for a new car?
