Hot Housing? Moi? ;)

20th April 2016 CambridgeMummy Leave a Comment

When it comes to homework and/or anything that feels like learning, it’s a proper Kevin and Perry scene in this house. It’s a shame really that the boys aren’t old enough to know what Kevin and Perry are – perhaps some YouTube education is in order? I worry that I’m too much of a tiger mom or that I’ll look back and feel that I was hot housing the boys in some ways. I know we need to make learning as fun as we can, if they’re going to keep going with it, but making it happen is rather more challenging! I was therefore rather intrigued to see that Education Quizzes wanted some people to check out their site.

It’s interesting, having been a Twinkl subscriber for so long, to be checking out something that’s kind of similar, but different – this is a site where the premise is that you play a game online and there’s no printing involved. There’s a huge range of topics – and I’m impressed by this – this is KS2’s offering…

We checked out the times table quizzes and W – who is nearly 8, said it was ‘ok’ – I think it did the job – it’s just that he’s used to something more animated from the likes of the Kids iPlayer from the BBC. At £7.50 a month, it’s certainly affordable. I think if we can get it to work on our phones we’ll sign up as it’s good to have things for them to do, like this, when we’re on the move. I can’t stand the idea of Clash of Clans frying their brains any more than it has already!

I think we need more time to explore more of the site – I liked the science section as it’s been a great conversation starter for us and spurred us on to look at other things. I liked knowing that the education quizzes are written by teachers and also, that the site is being developed for schools use as well – to make this available to use at home if you can’t afford the monthly subscription. Check out the info here: http://www.educationquizzes.com/schools-uk/

So, what do you think? Should we also teach our children when they are at home? What do you like to do with them? Am I being a tiger mom? I can’t remember what I did or didn’t do with my own mum and dad. I’ll call them and ask!
